BIODIVERSITÄTSFORSCHUNG – MEILENSTEINE ZUR NACHHALTIGKEIT!

Biodiversity Research - Milestones for Sustainability

29-30 March 2010 at the Umweltforum Auferstehungskirche in Berlin, Germany

A public conference on biodiversity research and its contribution to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development will be held on 29-30 March 2010 at the Umweltforum Auferstehungskirche in Berlin, Germany. The conference is organized by the project coordinators of the transdisciplinary research programme “Biodiversity and Global Change” (BIOLOG) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The conference is co-sponsored by the Japanese-German Center Berlin.

The meeting has special significance during the International Year of Biodiversity 2010 where the presidency of the Convention on Biological Diversity will pass from Germany to Japan at the 10th Conference of the Parties in Nagoya, Japan. Biodiversity science will be the focus of the event, and implications of research results for biodiversity monitoring and biodiversity conservation will be discussed in the context of national, European and international policies for sustainable use of natural resources.

The aim of the conference is twofold: To communicate the state of the art of biodiversity science, and to discuss with stakeholders the successes of transdisciplinary research as well as the challenges ahead. Unprecedented levels of cooperation across scientific disciplines are necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the complex ecological and socio-economic systems on which human well-being relies. In order to put the best available knowledge into practice, communication between scientists and stakeholders needs to become much more efficient than has hitherto been the case. The experiences gained in the transdisciplinary research projects of the BIOLOG programme will be the starting point for the debates, and aspects of communication and networking will be covered in particular by the new “Network - Forum for Biodiversity Research Germany” (a project of DIVERSITAS Germany) as well as invited guest speakers.

The conference will comprise sections with an international focus where the language will be English and sections that concentrate on issues in the German-speaking areas of Central Europe where presentations and discussions will be held in German.
